The love of writing isn’t something new.
There is a belief that the love of writing comes from the love of reading. In truth, these two were loved at the same time, but only in the later chapters of my story.
My mother tells me that even before I learned to read at school, I would endlessly ask her to buy me books. One of my earliest childhood memories is picking up a book at bedtime and, instead of my mother reading it to me, I asked her to listen to me read it. Whenever I finished “reading” a page, my mother would smile and say I was reading very well. And I felt so happy that I already knew how to read. In reality, I already knew the story because my parents had told it to me time and time again, so I was just repeating what I remembered of the story and the context of the drawings. Therefore, you could say that the love of reading came first.
Later, when I was further along in school, and because I had good feedback from my primary school teacher about my writing, I thought about writing a book. I remember lying in bed with a notebook writing it. However, I never finished it. I don’t even know what it was about.
During my teenage years, reading reappeared in my life as a hobby. I remember pulling all-nighters in the summer to read “just one more chapter.” Fanfictions were also a huge hit. Later came the desire to write as well. Those stories are still on Wattpad. Incomplete. I remember enjoying writing, doing it without thinking about the next sentence. Writing on and on until the chapter unfolded in front of me, as if I hadn’t even been the one writing it and was merely a spectator. However, I couldn’t move forward with the stories (there were two of them!) because I had no structure. Although even today I look at what I wrote with a certain sense of pride (both of the idea and the development), I know that at the time I wasn’t ready to write them completely.
Now I feel I am. Ready. To try and learn, at least. After a hiatus, both from reading and writing, I went back to reading at the beginning of this year. And I expanded my range of literary genres — I read classics, romance, romantasy, mysteries, crime mysteries… As time went by, the desire to write returned too. My internal monologue made me a bit hesitant (Oh, but that’s so cliché… So many people who read decide to write…).
However, I didn’t let those thoughts affect me. Why would I stop doing something just because everyone else does it? Besides, I’ve always loved writing, I wouldn’t be doing it just because other people do. I decided I would return publicly to give myself more motivation and not give up halfway through like I always did. To document my progress, to have more accountability. I love when things are well organized and I only have to think about what I’m going to write next. That’s why I created the blog. With its categories and a posting schedule to keep me consistent and help me start incorporating a writing routine into my daily life.
What will the reader of my blog find? Well, this blog is organized into three different categories.
- The Process: Here, I will post about my routine, the techniques I’m learning, where I look for information, the blocks I face, and also the achievements I accumulate along the way.
- The Readings: Then, I will present what I’m reading, how I feel about those reads, my reviews, and what I take away from them for my own writing.
- The Narratives: Finally, I will share what I am writing (short stories, tales, and creative writing exercises).
If you also enjoy reading, or if you write/want to start writing, or if you simply want to follow my journey, welcome to The Written Pages.
